Retatrutide: What a Phase 2 Obesity Trial Reported

A 48-week phase 2 randomized trial studied retatrutide, an investigational GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon receptor agonist, in adults with obesity.

Retatrutide is an investigational medicine that acts on three hormone receptors involved in appetite and metabolism. The phase 2 trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023 compared several doses with placebo over 48 weeks in adults with obesity.

Participants receiving retatrutide lost more body weight than those on placebo, and gastrointestinal side effects were the most commonly reported. Retatrutide is not approved by the FDA; larger phase 3 trials are ongoing. At SEIVA it is available only after clinician review.

Key takeaways

  • Investigational — not FDA-approved.
  • Phase 2 data only; phase 3 trials are ongoing.
  • Clinician review is required at SEIVA.
